How Often Should I Use Shampoo/Wash My Hair?
The haircare community has been forever split on the timeless question, how often should I wash my hair?
You could ask this question to 100 different people and get 100 different answers. Once a day, once a week, once a month… or never. It seems as though no one knows the real answer.
We’re here to tell you that those who advise against shampooing once a day are mostly right. Generally, 2-3 times a week is perfect… for most people.
As we’ll explain, it really depends on the individual.
Hair is not ‘one size fits all’. In fact, far from it. We all have different hair types, hair volumes, scalps, etc.
How often you should wash and shampoo your hair depends entirely on your hair - shocking, right?
What Shampooing Does to Your Hair
The more you shampoo, the more oily your scalp will be. At least, that’s the reality for most of us.
Our bodies produce a natural oil called ‘sebum’. It just so happens that the scalp produces much more sebum than any other part of our body.
And, this is what keeps your hair healthy.
Every time you shampoo, you strip your hair of sebum - its natural oils. When you do this, you are promoting dry hair and ‘training’ your scalp to make less sebum.
The more you wash, the dryer your hair will be. The less you wash, the more of your natural oils will remain in your hair - this is why our hair gets ‘greasy’ the longer we go without shampooing.
Toeing the line between overwashing and not washing our hair enough is a balancing act.
Why It Depends on Your Scalp and Hair Type
Some people have ‘oily-er’ scalps than others, and this might require almost daily washing.
Others with scalps that produce less-than-normal amounts of sebum may only need to wash their hair once a week.
Also, your hair texture and type will influence your shampoo-habits.
Generally, those with thicker hair can go longer without washing. Thin, straight, and silky hair will likely require more frequent shampooing than curly and coarse hair.
Besides hair type, your lifestyle habits can also affect how often you need to shampoo.
For example, if you hit the gym everyday the sweat will clog your pores and make your hair more oily. In that case, shampooing often is ideal.
So, How Often You Should Wash Your Hair?
There is nothing wrong with showering daily. It’s actually better than the alternative - washing our face and body every day is the key to hygiene.
But, you probably don’t need to grab the shampoo every time you step in the shower.
Generally, washing your hair once every 2-3 days should be perfect for most people. Try it yourself - does your hair get oily the day after? You might want to shampoo every other day and only every single day in extreme circumstances.
Or, shampooing 2-3 times a week, is your hair still brittle and dry? Go longer - try for once a week, or even less.
It’s worth noting that cheap low-quality shampoo and other hair-care products can do more damage than good for your hair, defeating the purpose of washing in the first place. Harmful chemicals and ingredients may be overly-drying your hair or making it excessively greasy.
