Why Oil Your Hair

There are many reasons to oil your hair. If you haven't tried it before, the process will change the state of your hair and scalp in significant ways. One of the biggest ways, as a reason to oil your hair, is that it can treat and prevent seborrheic dermatitis or eczema on the scalp. This condition is characterized by scaly patches, a flaky scalp, stubborn dandruff, and irritated red skin. It can be very difficult and challenging to manage. You will also likely have an itchy scalp. If you have this scalp condition, it’s a good idea to start the right hair care routine that treats the problem. In the worst case, medicated treatments and shampoos may be needed. It’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor or dermatologist in very severe cases.

For mild cases of seborrheic dermatitis, getting on the right schedule of scalp and hair oiling may help to alleviate the symptoms of dry scalp. For those who don’t have this problem, it’s still beneficial to oil the hair and scalp on a regular schedule of self-care.

Oiling your hair and scalp will help to restore moisture to the hair strands, prevent hair loss, and encourage circulation on the scalp and sebaceous glands for improved hair growth.

How to Oil Your Hair

There are a few different methods for oiling your hair. Which one you try will depend on how often you want to oil your scalp, and what’s right for your hair type. You may even find that doing a few of these methods works best for your hair and scalp.

1. Before Shampoo Method

A pre-shampoo oil will help prevent dry and brittle hair. The act of washing the hair itself can be dehydrating because of the cleansers and condition of the water that we use. It will strip the hair of its natural moisture that comes from the healthy oils or sebum production present on the scalp. That’s why going with a pre-shampoo oil is so amazing for dry hair.

All you have to do is massage the oil onto your scalp and hair for a few minutes before you use regular shampoo. It’s best to leave it on for a least 30 minutes before you shampoo it out, or longer if you can. Some people do this overnight before a shampoo. Just make sure you wear a shower cap or satin bonnet to bed that will protect your bedding from the oils. You can do this treatment before each time you shampoo your hair. For natural hair, that might only be once a week or every other week, depending on your shampoo schedule.

2. Hot Oil Method

Using hot oil will help it penetrate better into the scalp and the hair cuticles. The hot oil treatments tend to nourish brittle, dry, and frizzy strands better, since heat works to penetrate easier than room temperature oil. It helps to seal up the hair cuticles, making them healthier and stronger in the process. You’ll notice less breakage and damage from hot tools or treatments when you are regularly hot oiling your scalp and hair. Your hair will be so much stronger. It also helps to get rid of dandruff too.

Some oils to try are castor oil, coconut oil, argan oil, and almond oil. Use these as carrier oils and then mix in a few drops of essential oils for extra benefit in aromatherapy while hot oiling. The process is quite pleasant and soothing when treating yourself to this type of scalp treatment.

The way to do a hot oil treatment is by gently warming up the oil in the microwave for around 15 to 30 seconds. A double-boiler on the stove also works. Keep in mind that you don’t want it to be scorching hot, but warm enough to work on the hair and scalp. Apply a liberal amount to the hair and scalp. Then cover your hair with a shower cap for at least 30 minutes or overnight if you choose. Do this treatment once a week on clean hair that is damp or dry. Then just rinse out, shampoo, and style as usual.

3. Scalp Massage Method

The massage method of oiling your scalp is so beneficial for circulation. Plus, it feels amazing and will lead to a sense of complete relaxation. And that doesn’t even mention the benefits for your hair and scalp!

Grab your hair oil and find somewhere comfortable to sit so that you can do the massage for at least five to 10 minutes. Breathe deeply and enjoy the process of the scalp massage. Apply the oil to your scalp, and with your fingertips gently massage all areas of your scalp from the base of your hairline to the front of your forehead.

You can do this hair and scalp oiling massage with our Canvas Beauty Hair Blossom Serum. Plus, you don’t even have to rinse it out. Use it every day to promote enhanced hair growth and a healthier scalp.

Easy Mistakes to Avoid

There are some easy mistakes to avoid while oiling your hair and scalp that you should watch out for.

  • Don’t comb your hair while you are oiling your scalp. This can lead to breakage of the hair strands. If you really feel like you need to comb the oil through, take your time, and use a wide-tooth comb.
  • It’s also important that you not apply the oil to very wet hair since the water is already flooding the hair cuticle and it won’t be able to absorb the oil effectively.
  • Even though you want to be generous to a certain point when applying the hair oil, it’s important that you don’t overdo it. You don’t want to be left with seriously greasy hair when using excess oil. After a few tries, you’ll figure out the optimum amount of oil for your scalp and hair.
  • Try not to tie your hair up too tight while doing a hot oil treatment. The scalp is very relaxed, as are the hair follicles, so it’s going to lead to breakage if you tie your hair too restrictively in a protective style.

How Often to Oil Your Scalp

Like we said before, it’s easy to use our Canvas Beauty Hair Blossom Serum every day or even every other day. With different hair types, from curly hair to fine hair, you may need to adjust your routine of hair oiling if you are doing the pre-shampoo method, or the deep hot oil treatment method. Here are some general guidelines for different hair types.

Healthy Hair

Healthy hair is a blessing, right? Even with a healthy scalp, using our daily serum is going to produce even better results for your hair and scalp. You can easily do a pre-shampoo treatment with hair oil or a deep hot oil treatment once a week or every other week.

Dry Hair

Dry hair needs extra love and attention to make sure it’s healthy. That’s why doing a hot oil treatment twice a week will help. Make sure that you do a pre-shampoo oiling each time you wash your hair to help restore moisture to your strands.

Oily Hair

If you have oily hair which is usually caused by an oily scalp, you can probably do a scalp oiling treatment only once a month. If you are using the Hair Blossom Serum, you may want to skip doing it every day and just apply it once or twice a week. With a greasy scalp, using oil is less recommended as your scalp is already producing enough oil, and a dry shampoo may be a necessity in your routine. It can be beneficial for unclogging pores but stay on the lower frequency for applying any oils.
