How to Get Rid of a Dry and Itchy Scalp

A Quick Guide to Get Rid of a Dry and Itchy Scalp

There’s nothing quite like the relief you feel when you hit that spot that’s been itching like crazy.  Itching is often a sign of growth but there could be many reasons both health related and not that cause this issue. Let’s dive into some causes of a dry and itchy scalp and find a solution.

If your itching comes from an underlying health issue you may need over the counter medicine or a special shampoo. Some of the many causes of dry and itchy scalp are these health related issues:

  • Scalp Psoriasis
  • Nerve Problems
  • Skin Cancer
  • Dandruff
  • Head Lice
  • Hives
  • Scalp Ringworm
  • Allergic Reaction to hair products
  • Atopic Dermatitis
  • Scabies

If your itchy and dry scalp is unrelated to health it could have more to do with our hair routine.

  • Wearing braids, other protective styles and tight ponytails can cause dryness and itchiness.
    • When your scalp is not getting enough air flow, this can cause it to overheat and cause your scalp to itch. Always make sure you allow your scalp to breathe every once in a while if you do decide to rock braids and weaves. Try to have a good balance between your protective styles and letting your hair be free.
  • Using oil while wearing protective styles like braids will help with some of the itching and avoid dryness.
  • After letting your hair down from a protective style you always want to make sure to do a deep treatment. Your hair is going to need some loving after being up for a longer period of time than it’s accustomed to.
  • Prior to deep conditioning you want to ensure that you’re washing your hair correctly. When using shampoo you want to make sure to focus on your scalp more than your actual hair.
  • Cleanse your scalp from any excess residue and build up which is another cause of dry/itchy scalp by exfoliating it no more than once a week.
  • Rinsing your hair with cool or cold water will help to close the follicles and skin’s pores, this will help to keep excess residue and other harmful substances. The cool water can also help to relieve the itch.

Baby scratching their scalp

When push comes to shove the best tip you can receive is just stop scratching your hair, I know you want the itching to stop but scratching can do more harm than good.
